Reason why you should only shop Winter Clothing after Christmas

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Everything works on a calendar, and fashion is no exception!

To get the most bang for your buck all the time, let’s have a look at Fashion’s retail calendar. The calendar we’re looking at holds true for most international stores (even though it’s basically summer all-year round for us in Sunny Singapore!), so let’s get right into it!

Starting off with Winter, the season starts sometime in September when the winter pieces (jackets, scarves, etc) start making their way into the stores. After that, in November, more Christmas-y holiday themed clothes and accessories will be up for grabs (reindeer themed earrings??!!) in late October or November. Personally, I feel in Singapore, these things only hit the racks sometime in mid-November onwards, so always refer to the international guides with a pinch of salt. After that, Resort Wear starts coming out in December, and if you don’t know what that is, it’s just a fancy name for the pre-Spring collection that comes after the Winter Season!

When the Spring/Summer clothing start appearing in January (not sure why this happens so early in January but tbh the retail calendar is a little whacky to me), it’s the best time to start buying your Winter Clothing! This is when one of the two biggest season change-over occurs (Fall/Winter to Spring/Summer), and this naturally means one of the two biggest mark-downs in the year 🎉 I was in Vivocity a couple days ago, and honestly I felt so cheated! I was just in SuperDry Mandarin Gallery a few days prior to that, and they were running a 30% store-wide sale… But when I was in VivoCity they bumped it up to 40% 😭 So yes, the moral of the story is to always wait if you can!

So Winter Clothing? Always after Christmas.

September – Winter Clothes Appear on Racks

Next up!!! Summer! Although this is more like Spring/Summer… But anyway… Did you know that the Paris fashion week for Spring/Summer already happened… in October?! Whacky calendar, I know. Still, for normal people like us, Spring-style clothing starts to appear in stores in January, while the real Summer fashion only starts sometime in April! To mark the end of the Summer season, Fall goods will start coming in July (once again, too early??!?!). So what does this mean?! It means that the biggest sale on Spring/Summer clothes will begin in mid-late July! Bargain-hunting time 🤑 Singapore being Sunny Singapore though, we can still wait for August to see if there are anymore sales ongoing.

January/February – Spring-style Garments Appear, Massive Deals on Winter Clothing
March – Biggest Drop of Spring Fashion
April – Summer Fashion ☀️ Time!
July – The Beginning of The End… Fall-style Apparel Appear in Stores, Discounts on Summer Goods
August – Even Better Discounts on Summer Goods!

Final Shopping Tips

  1. Always buy at the start of season for a wider selection, and at the very end of a season for the biggest bargains
  2. Clothes usually go on sale 6 weeks after they hit the racks/online stores
  3. Bargain Shoppers Best Months – January (For Fall/Winter Items) and July/August (For Spring/Summer)
  4. Some stores (especially streetwear brands like Supreme) ignore the Fashion Retail Calendar and have drops throughout the year so their sales are much less predictable
  5. The calendar can be pretty whacky and not everyone follows it, so use it as a guide, and trust your own bargain-hunter skills when shopping!!!

Little Bit of Extra Information

If you’re curious about why all the Fashion Weeks are so early (usually around three months early, give or take), there are a couple of reasons!

  1. Retail buyers want time to view and decide the pieces they’d like to select
  2. Designers will need time to bulk manufacture
  3. Magazines need to pick up clothing samples to use for photoshoots

So there we have it! The best way to get the best bargains is to look at the calendar… And this works for products like electronics as well…

Especially Cameras!

Since the majority of new models for cameras are announced sometime in January/February (and also September), retail stores often try to clear out their stock at the end of the year in anticipation of this! So if you’re looking for a bargain, the best time would be now! (i.e. at the end of the year, sometime after Christmas). New stocks only reach stores about 1 to 2 months after these models are released, so you still have quite a bit of time!

Before I ramble on more about calendars and products… Let’s end the post here. Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! 🎉
